The Roman Colosseum is an eternally emotional experience. I doubt anyone visiting Rome would not include the Colosseum in their itinerary. It is a marvel of design and engineering and the fact that it has survived so long is a testament to those responsible for its creation.
It is not difficult to envisage what it must have looked like in its pomp as you walk around and look down on the remains of the underground walls and rooms and admire the overall circular structure.
The Flavian Amphitheater, better known as the “Colosseum,” is the largest and most majestic amphitheater of ancient times. It is the second most visited monument in the world (after the Great Wall of China), and in 2007 was included among the seven new wonders of the modern world.
The Roman Colosseum: how I created this photograph
What I like most in this photograph is the contrast of the ancient walls against a perfectly saturated, sapphire blue sky. By the way, I was very lucky the day I created this image. It was very windy, the sky was very clean (a rare event in Rome) and this is the reason this photograph has plenty of texture, definition and sharp contrast.
I had simply to wait for the right position of the sun, while I was eating some tasty ice cream. Sometimes the life of the photographer is not so bad!
One of the challenges for a photographer trying to capture something new in a famous monument is that it has been photographed thousands of times.
How do you create something different? Being original with a photograph of the Roman Colosseum is really a hard mission. I tried to propose something different by creating an unusual composition.
First of all, I chose a vertical frame and I think this is a very balanced image. On the lower side of the photograph, you have the heavy materiality of the Roman Colosseum, made of ancient marbles. On top, you have the negative space of the deep blue; pure with nothing distracting in it. This gives a good visual balance for the entire image.
Second, I like to create photographs out of time, that can be relevant now or in 50 years from today. This is the reason I eliminate any human presence in the photographs: no reference to fashion means an image that’s forever timeless.
