As soon as my family, my energetic 2-year-old son Lorenzo, my patient wife Clara, and I stepped off the waterbus and into the darkness, I fell in love with the city.
I fell in love with the constant lapping of the water, the dimly-lit streets, the twists and turns, the modes of transport (only by foot or boat), and the breath-taking architecture.
Venice is otherworldly. There are no cars noisily zipping past you, the city seems to rise up out of the water, and everything appears peaceful.
Leaving plenty of time to get lost was the smartest thing we did. In Venice, it’s possible to set out in any direction and find yourself surrounded by beauty or face-to-face with a lovely café or gelateria.
Traveling through Venice and walking through the labyrinth of pathways, visiting the churches, and taking a gondola ride, are just a few ways to experience the Floating City.

Sunrise in Venice from St. Mark’s Square
I’m in love with this image. It was an amazing sunrise behind Santa Maria della Salute Church, one of the most iconic churches in the city. I was set up with my camera and tripod in St. Mark’s Square, just waiting for the perfect light.
I recalled previous times in this city so I knew what the best possible option for this silhouette based on the position of the sun at sunrise in Venice.
I had the image in mind from the very beginning. Not only was I at the right moment, but I was also very lucky.
It was windy, so it was possible to have a very sharp picture. At the same time, there were a few clouds in the sky, a sky without clouds can be boring and, for a photographer, a limitation. But, most importantly, there were a few minutes where the light was absolutely amazing.
I had never before seen an orange that intense. The silhouette in this photograph includes the bell tower of Santa Maria della Salute Church and several examples of traditional Venetian architecture. The line of the sea at the base of the photograph helps to create depth of field.
It was a photographer’s dream—the perfect time and the exact right location.
