Venice: City of Water

Venice is a city of water and emotion. It is, without a doubt, one of the most famous cities in the world. Certainly, one of the most famous locations in Italy, give or take the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain.

Yet even Venice – instantly recognizable to anyone with eyes – has the capacity to surprise.

Venice city

Venice is viewed in different ways due to its unique peculiarities.

It is the City of Water because of its canals. In fact, the city is built on a collection of 118 little islands in the center of the Venetian Lagoon and is home to hundreds of canals—approximately 150. It is the City of Bridges due to the presence of more than 400 bridges that permit people and traffic to cross its canals that connect all parts of the city.

Venice is the City of Gondole, which is the most famous and romantic means of experiencing the city. The gondola is the symbol of the city because it is one of the images people immediately connect to the city of Venice. It has made the city recognizable all over the world. Venice is also the City of Lights. It is impossible to describe the way it looks when the sun goes down and the city is breathtakingly illuminated.

Venice is Like Eating an Entire Box of Chocolate Liqueurs in One Go

It’s very difficult to find a view of Venice, that has not already been captured because it is one of the most photographed subjects in the world. You can find photographs of St. Mark’s Square, Palazzo Ducale, or Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs).

It’s quite rare to have all of them in the same frame for a simple reason: you have to photograph this amazing city from the water in front of Palazzo Ducale. You must be fortunate to have perfectly calm water to create a good photograph and you need the perfect light.

And you must have all of these elements at the exact same moment. I was only able to create this image after several attempts and one full week dedicated to photographing this city.

In this photograph, you can admire the St. Mark’s Bell Tower on the left side, the exquisite marble of Palazzo Ducale in front, and the Bridge of Sighs on the right. Of course, a line of traditional Gondolas is in front of Palazzo Ducale and all of this was captured in one unique photograph taken from the water—Venice’s most natural element.

Italian framed art

I have several personal memories related to the beauty of this city. The best two times of day to enjoy Venice are late in the evening and in the early hours of the morning. At those times, the flow of tourists is not heavy and you can discover the true soul of Venice.

Every time I come back to Venice there is one thing that I enjoy the most: leaving my Hotel room while my family is still sleeping and taking a walk before sunrise. It’s really a magic moment I enjoy by myself. Around 08:00 a.m. I usually come back to my Hotel, give a good morning kiss to my family and we have breakfast together. These are the important times and moments in life!

As a photographer, my inspiration was the unique combination of the city's timeless architecture, the sun-drenched piazza, and the vibrant life that pulses through the city's veins. This photograph is my interpretation of the city's soul and spirit - a testament to its resilience, its history, and its beguiling beauty. The uniqueness lies in the perspective it offers – a viewpoint less traveled, yet deeply impactful.

The photo was taken in the morning, casting a warm, inviting glow over the city. The strong natural light contrasts with the gentle waves of the lagoon, creating a dynamic and vivid scene that instantly captures attention.

This photograph is more than just a snapshot of a place; it's an invitation to experience the allure of Venice. It's perfect for the discerning collector who values fine art's ability to evoke emotion, provoke thought, and enhance any living or workspace.

This print will add a touch of European elegance to a living room, study, or office, instantly elevating the aesthetic appeal of any room.

In essence, owning this photograph is an investment in beauty, sophistication, and a unique narrative about one of the world's most enchanting cities.

Paolo Modena

My name is Paolo. I am a photographer. I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in Italy, surrounded by the art that is the envy of the world. I enjoy photography because it has caused me to fall in love with light, shade, and color. I see the world around me with fresh eyes every single day. And sometimes, when the mood is right, I just sit back and enjoy the moment without taking a photo.
